Bridal Skincare; everything you need to follow, & more!

We’ve touched on bridal previews, finding the perfect Makeup Artist, and some subscription box products. But a question that I get from almost every bride is What should I do for my skin?! Makeup does wonders, but our brushes are not magic wands. Your foundation can only be as flawless as your skincare regimen and prep is!

I’ve teamed up with an amazing skincare EXPERT, Daniela Marcolla, to give you everything you need to know about prepping your skin for your big day! She will answer all of the questions that you asked on my Instagram and in your bridal makeup inquiries. Keep reading to get the scoop on what to do AND what not to do before your wedding day!

Daniela.jpg

First, a little background info! Daniela Marcolla is a licensed esthetician who was quite literally born into the beauty industry. Her mother owns a hair salon that she grew up in and that laid the path for her love of beauty. After obtaining her degree in education, she knew she needed to follow her heart- and esthetic school was the answer. After years of working in the field at established salons and even as an educator, she was able to build her dream in-home studio! She has been thoroughly trained by some of the most prestigious skin care companies, including Image Skincare, Dermalogica, Tata Harper, and Elizabeth Arden, (just to name a few of the many!)

My Facial experience with Daniela!

I hadn’t had a facial in years! I used to go to a big plastic surgeon’s medical spa, and I loved it- but it broke the bank. After having my son, I did not have the time or extra money to splurge on a $250 facial and didn’t want to be persuaded to buy another $300 worth of products! When I saw Daniela on Instagram, I picked her brain about my skin concerns and she was SO helpful. She was extremely knowledgeable about all of the ingredients to use and avoid. It was obvious that she was the real deal!

Since so many of my brides often turn to me for their skincare questions (of course they want beautiful, radiant skin for their wedding!), I knew I needed to guide them with EXPERT advice. I didn’t want to recommend products that I knew were popular, I wanted to make sure I was giving them the best advice for THEM.

I went to Daniela’s stunning in-home spa and it was nothing short of amazing. It is decorated beautifully, feels so serene, and truly feels like you’re in a spa (I forgot that I was in her house!) She has an incredible heated bed, light relaxing music, and wonderful aromatherapy in the air. She begins by cleansing the skin, then we spoke about my skin concerns and what her concerns were. She continued to apply a mask targeted my needs, did some extractions, massaged my arms/hands — it was heavenly!!

Facial.jpg

After my facial, my skin actually felt like it could BREATHE! It was so clear and hydrated. I did not breakout and my skin glowed for days. I then purchased the products that she recommended- most of which were in my budget and right on Amazon (win-win!). I can see such a drastic difference in my texture and even elasticity. (I was a few months away from trying botox before Daniela!) What started as a collaboration for my brides, turned into an unbelieveable experience for me, and I am SO grateful to Daniela for restoring my skin that I have been struggling with for so long! I have already booked my next appointment and I wholeheartedly believe that EVERY BRIDE NEEDS TO SEE HER!

Answers to all of YOUR questions:

Why is skincare so important, if you’re covering it with makeup?

The most important part of a flawless makeup application is a good canvas. Breakouts and congested skin cannot always be covered. Dry flaky skin cannot be covered either. The better condition your skin is in, the more flawless and glowing your makeup will look. In your wedding day, you don’t want to look like your “covering” anything up, you want to look like yourself with makeup used to accentuate your existing beauty.

When should I get a facial before my wedding?

If you have troubled skin, I suggested starting to  get facials about 4 months before your wedding, that allows 4 facials to correct any major concerns, getting your skin ideal for your wedding day, and honeymoon! The last full facial with extractions you should receive is 2 weeks prior, however the week of you can always get a hydrating facial with no extractions.

How often should I get a facial?

Everyone’s skin is different, some brides need facials more often than others. At the very LEAST, 4 times a year (change of every season), but you can get facials as often as once a month to maintain optimal results.

How do I find a good regimen for me? I’m scared to try too much before my wedding.

If monthly facials don’t fit into your wedding budget, (because we know wedding costs can start piling up!) or your simply just nervous about them, at the very least you can book a skin care consultation with me. I will cleanse your skin and analyze. We will discuss your current routine and I will educate you on how to correct your concerns. Keeping it simple is the key, prior to your wedding. I always suggest products within your budget. I don’t sell the products myself, so I’m not in it for the commission — keeping this in mind, you know if I’m suggesting something it’s truly because it really works! My goal is to give my clients results, I am not just filling their bathroom drawers with products!

I want my skin to look radiant for my wedding day, what skincare products can I start using now?

I can’t truly suggest the correct products for you without seeing your skin, but they key to radiant skin is exfoliation and hydration! Remember that exfoliation is a balance; never over exfoliate or use anything too harsh on your skin. Always keep it hydrated! Hydration also starts from within, so drinking plenty of water does have a great effect on your skin’s radiance.

What type of cleanser and moisturizer should I use?

Every skin type calls for different cleansers and moisturizers. If your skin is oily, you want to opt for a gel cleanser, a hyaluronic serum and an oil free moisturizer. If your skin is dry, a hydrating cleanser, and a night cream is super important to keep your skin hydrated. After your facial with me, I will be able to recommend the perfect cleanser/moisturizer regimen specifically for you.

I struggle with blackheads, I’m afraid you’ll see my pores under my wedding makeup- what can I do to avoid this?

Absolutely get a good facial 2 weeks before your wedding to clean out your pores. However your pores themselves, even though clean, may still be visible. I suggest picking up the best pore filling primer you can find and asking your makeup artist to use that on you! Airbrush foundation that Lauren uses is silicone based, so it will definitely help to minimize the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles!

What can I do for the puffiness under my eyes- to get rid of it and also avoid makeup creasing?

Ice roller and jade roller! Also try an eye cream with caffeine in it! To avoid creasing, your makeup artist (Lauren ;) ) will be sure to apply thin layers of powder. An easy trick to refresh your concealer is to just use your ring finger throughout the day to gently pat the area. The warmth of your finger will help to reactivate the concealer and push it into place. There’s only so much that makeup can do, as it is still a liquid and will settle the more that your face moves, but you can definitely conceal any creasing by touching it up. That is another reason that Lauren recommends booking a half or full day touch-up service, where Lauren will stay with you on your biggest day!

Does diet really affect your skin?

Yes, some people more than others - and others simply don’t make the connection, but absolutely!

How can I treat my acne scars?

It really depends on the type of scarring you have; whether they are raised scars or just pigmented. Microdermabrasion can help with pigmented acne scars, along with specific products that will help even out the pigmentation in your skin. If your scars are raised, silicone scar patches can help flatten their appearance. A consultation will definitely help us to personalize your skincare journey to clear, even complexion.

Is it bad to pop little black heads and white heads? They keep coming back!

Yes! Whiteheads, or pustules, are little infected pores. Popping them incorrectly can spread the infection and cause other breakouts. When you need your blackheads removed or have a pustule, it is better to get a facial and let an esthetician do the job for you. We are educated in the correct way to do extractions without harming your skin or spreading infection. After your skin is extracted, we can determine the best products for your skin to help avoid the re-occurrence of those annoying little guys!

Where would you start with a skincare regimen? I don’t want to spend a fortune, just a few products that will improve my skins texture.

The texture of your skin can change based on a couple of different factors; rosacea, keratosis pilaris, acne scars, skin that has been damaged by wrong product usage, or just severely dry skin. I would have to see your skin in order to tell you what products are good for your skin specifically, however one product that does help with texture is retinol! You would want to begin use 3 months prior to your wedding. This will allow your skin the time to adjust to it. However, you would not use retinol if you have rosacea, kp, or damaged skin. Again, it really is essential to come in for a consultation. Skincare is not one size fits all and that tends to be a big problem in the beauty industry. What works for one person may not work for you. Having a clear, easy regimen that is PERSONALIZED to you will truly make all the difference!

Basically, taking care of your skin and making skincare a priority is essesntial - especially before your big day! If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact Lauren or Daniela!!

Thank you to Daniela for all of your expert guidance AND for truly turning my skin around! I am so grateful to know you! xoxo

Boxy Charm Subscription Box Review

Is it worth $21/month? Are they products that I will actually use? Is it good for a bride?

Answers to all of your Boxy Charm questions from a Professional Makeup Artist’s perspective. Plus pro tips on how to use the products in the March box!

I am now on my second month of Boxy Charm products. I must say, I am pleasantly surprised that I LOVE what I’ve been sent and have been using a lot of the products on myself AND my brides. For only $21 a month, you receive 4-5 FULL SIZE beauty products.

The products in the box have all been high-end brands and even some pro favorites, like the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. That mascara alone retails for the price of the whole box!

Why do a subscription box when you can just buy the products?

Boxy Charm is amazing because of the price. In the March box alone the products together retail for around $150+. It is also a great opportunity to try products that you may not have thought to purchase. I once received an eyebrow tint that I never thought I would like, and now it’s my favorite brow product!

March 2019 Box:

The March 2019 box is amazing!!!! What I got:

  1. Cover FX Perfecter Face Palette: ($45) I am a palette lover! But I don’t always splurge on buying palettes when I have so much in my kit already! Getting this in my kit made my day! It is a stunning palette AND it is an exclusive launch, limited edition. The powders are so blendable, smooth, and pigmented. There is a contour shade, 2 highlights (one champagne and one rosey), a beautiful pink blush, a finishing powder, AND a brightener.

The beauty of a palette like this is it’s versatility. Every single powder can be used on the face, eyes, AND lips. Let no powder go to waste! I am so happy to have this palette as an addition to my professional kit. (I may need to buy another for myself!)

    • Highlighters: Highlighters should be applied wherever the light would naturally hit your face, in all of the areas that you want to enhance. This includes the tops of the cheek bones, the center/tip of the nose, center of the forehead, bows of the lips, and center of the chin. You can also apply these gorgeous colors to the corners of the eye, brow bone, or simply use as eye shadows!

    • Contour: The contour shade is used to create dimension to the face. This should be applies and blended evenly right underneath the cheek bone, sides of the nose, top of the forehead (into the hairline), and under the jaw line. This shade is also beautiful as an eyeshadow.

    • Finishing Powder: This shade can be used to lightly dust the face to set your makeup. It can also be used to set concealer or eye primer, before you apply your shadows. This should be focused on the T-Zone, or center, of the face.

    • Blush: The blush should be applied to the apples of the cheeks. It helps to find the right location by smiling as you apply it. It is important for blush to be blended well into the rest of the makeup to avoid looking like a clown.

    • Brightener: A brightening powder can be used under the eyes for added illumination, or to set any highlighting areas. I like to use this BEFORE applying my highlighters, to give a more natural glow.

  2. Moda Powder and Soft Glow Kit: ($29.99) These brushes are so soft to the touch. There are 2 powder brushes; one is a little bit larger and denser for bronzing or setting. The other is smaller but perfect for setting under the eyes, lightly dusting setting powder, blush, or highlighter. I have similar brushes in my kit, but am excited to try these, as well!

  3. Ofra Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick: ($20) I am always on the hunt for beautiful bridal lipsticks. This was definitely one that I will use and recommend to my brides. It is the perfect mix of a rose and plum, with a little shimmer. It is long lasting, as well!

  4. Wander Lift Off Mask: ($34) This face mask was fun to use! It is a peel off mask that helps with brightening and purifying the skin. It is a pink pearl color, it applies very smoothly, and peels off easily. It did smell a little bit like sunscreen, and didn’t really leave my skin feeling as soft and clean as I expected. I was a little disappointed and don’t think I would purchase this again, but I am so glad I was able to try it!

  5. Manna Kadar Bloom Mascara: ($29) I am a mascara girl for sure! I will be honest, I don’t typically spend money to buy the higher end brands of mascara. I have tried them all but always go back to my L’Oreal Carbon Black. I’ve been loving the mascara’s in this box (last month was Better Than Sex). This mascara did not disappoint! It gives beautiful length, without looking clumpy or flaking. It truly “blooms” your lashes. I found it a good mascara for everyday because it looks very natural. (Not too much volume). I hadn’t tried any products from this brand before, but I am glad that I was introduced to it from Boxy Charm! After playing around, I ended up loving this mascara for the bottom lashes!

    • Mascara application: You should always start at the root of the lashes, as close to the upper lid as possible. Looking down into a mirror, as opposed to up or straight, will help to avoid any transfer onto your eyelid or brow bone. Begin at the root and wiggle in a zig zag motion to really get the product into the root. Then pull the mascara wand up through the hairs. Applying mascara with this technique will minimize the spidery, or clumpy look. For the bottom lashes, gently touch the wand to the root of the lashes and wiggle the same way. My trick to avoid spidery lower lashes is to use your finger to gently push againt the bottom of the lash AFTER you’ve applied the mascara. This will leave the lashes wispier, without a pointy clump. This trick also helps to minimize any mascara from transferring to your under-eye area throughout the day.

Is this box useful for brides?

Yes! Although you will most likely hire a professional for your wedding makeup, trying new products will give you an opportunity to play around with products to find things that you may love. You may have never thought to try a more pinkier blush, but if you tried this months box, you may fall in love with how the Cover FX blush looks on your skin tone! Since this box also sends skincare products like face masks, it is a great way to try products that may help your skin prepare for your big day! Without spending an arm and a leg in Sephora trying to find the best thing for you, this will send options right to your doorstep once a month. Even if there is a product that you DON’T love, it will help to narrow your search in finding the RIGHT routine for you.

Boxy Charm sends products that you WILL use. Not little trial sizes that will collect dust in your bathroom drawer. You really do get your money’s worth as long as you like at least ONE of the products. You can cancel any time, and they do send reminder email’s before the payment is taken. You can also send boxy charm as a gift, which is such a great idea, too!

What is a Bridal Preview?

Long Island Bridal Makeup Trial.png

Bridal Preview | (AKA Trial)

How to prepare, what to expect, what comes after, & more!

So you’ve found a few makeup artists that you’re interested in trying for your wedding day. But, the only way to make sure that they are truly the perfect fit for you is to schedule your bridal preview. (Many artists call it a “trial,” but this isn’t a Netflix subscription or a court case, so I prefer to call it a “preview“ as to what you will look like on your big day!) I am here to dish out everything you need to know about booking, preparing for, and ensuring that your bridal preview is exactly what it should be!

How to choose which makeup artist to do your bridal preview?

  • As you have been doing your research, you may have shopped around for makeup artists, received different prices and booking information. As mentioned in my previous blog (How to find the BEST makeup artist for you), I spilled all of the tips on how to find the “one.” To sum it up, go with your gut. The makeup artist that is prompt in responding, accommodating to your questions/concerns/schedule, and who’s portfolio is your style- THAT is who you should choose for your first preview.

  • The beauty of a preview is just that- it is only a preview. Start with which artist that your gut is guiding you to. You will probably love them after the preview and be able to check the “Makeup Artist” off of your wedding to-do list. If not, then you can move on to your other options and schedule other previews!

How to schedule your preview:

  • Contact the makeup artist. Check their website and/or Instagram to find out how they prefer to receive inquiries. You can also contact some artists directly through their profiles on The Knot and Wedding Wire. Links to their websites and contact forms should be easily accessible.

  • Ask questions. In your inquiry, feel free to begin asking any important questions that you have about their services, how they schedule their previews, pricing, etc. Give the artist some wedding details (date, location, vendors booked, etc.)

  • Ask to schedule a phone call. This is more efficient and a much easier way to ask the questions that you have. It is also a great opportunity to get a sense of the person you are hiring. It should be an exciting thing to plan, and speaking to the artist will start the building of trust and rapport with them and their company.

When to schedule your preview:

  • You can try to schedule your preview on a day that you have something planned. Be it your engagement party, engagement photo shoot, bridal shower, or even for a night out. This way you get to “use” your makeup AND have a chance to see how it photographs, test it’s durability, and feel how it wears on you.

  • Popular makeup artists book up to three years in advance. So don’t wait too long to schedule your preview, especially if your wedding date falls in the height* of wedding season. (And especially if your wedding date is on a Saturday!) (*Wedding season is from May to November.) The preview is not only to find your wedding look, but also to make sure the artist clicks with you. If you are unhappy with your preview, you need to make sure you have enough time to find another makeup artist. So, do not procrastinate when booking your preview!

  • I always recommend scheduling your preview in the morning/early afternoon. You want to wear your makeup as long as possible to test it’s durability, and have the chance to see it in different lighting throughout the day and night.

  • If you are already set on who you want your wedding makeup artist to be, then you can sign the contract, send your deposit and plan your preview for closer to your wedding date. In some cases, if there is a makeup artist that you have already used before- then the preview can be done later. But make sure that you secure them ahead of time with the contract and deposit, even if you plan a preview for later!

Preparing for your preview:

  • Hydrate as much as possible. Hydration is key to beautiful skin, which is so important under your makeup.

  • Stick to a skincare regimen that works for you. If you don’t have a regimen, your makeup artist can help advise you. You can also go for a facial and receive product recommendations that the specialist trusts for your skin.

  • Exfoliate! 24-48 hours before your appointment, use an exfoliating mask or scrub that works for your skin concerns. If you don’t have a product like that, even use a warm wash cloth with a simple cleanser to gently remove any dead skin cells that are laying on the surface. Many clients don’t realize that they need to exfoliate until AFTER their foundation is peeling or caking on their skin. Try to avoid this by being prepared for your preview!

  • Don’t pop pimples! If you get a pimple (and we ALL do), resist the urge to squeeze or pick. The color of a pimple can be covered, but a dry scab is very hard to conceal.

  • Wear a white shirt. Wearing white can wash you out- especially a white wedding gown. So for a realistic preview, wear something white to test the amount of makeup you need to wear. Wedding makeup is more than everyday makeup to begin with, but seeing your preview in white will help you see how much you need to compensate for the white dress.

  • Bring products that you love. If there is a blush that you wear everyday, give it to your makeup artist! Wearing a tried-and-true product gives a boost to your confidence and helps ensure that your look to stays true to YOU.

  • Before your appointment, cleanse your face thoroughly and apply your toner and moisturizer(s). Make sure to remove all of your mascara and eyeliner.

What to expect during your preview:

  • I usually arrive a few minutes early. I bring my professional kit, a directors chair, and a professional ring light.

  • As I set up my kit, we talk all about your wedding details and vision. I ask questions about the type of makeup you wear everyday AND for a night out. This gives me an idea of your typical looks, as it is so important that the look I create still resembles YOU.

  • We start with a light, natural option. We can try both a standard strip lash and individual lashes to see which is a better fit for you.

  • From there, we add more drama and depth to the look. This will allow you to see different options and have the perfect amount of makeup on for you. Drama doesn’t mean CAKEY. My style of drama is creating depth to your features by added light layers. Makeup applied in appropriate LAYERS will not get cakey, if applied correctly.

  • Once we have designed the perfect look, I always take pictures. After your trial, I take notes and will always replicate exactly what we did for your big day, including all of the tweaks we made to achieve it.

After the preview:

  • After your bridal preview, I will send you all of the booking information if your date is not yet booked. This includes a bridal service contract and deposit information. Once your contract and deposit is received, your date is secured!

  • I always keep communication open with my brides. Once you become an “LG Artistry Bride,” I give you my phone number and you can always text me with questions or wedding details. (We tend to become friends!)

Bridal Previews are so important! Booking them ahead of schedule and securing your date as soon as possible is crucial! I love all of my brides and continue to take so much pride in booking new bridal previews!
